Description
The Valley of Viñales is a fertile depression surrounded by Mogotes (a karstic formation). Mogotes are limestone mountains with straight sides and rounded tops covered by a lush vegetation that includes palm trees, orchids and other tropical plants. The oxidized iron contained by the valley soils gives its intense red color which contrast with the green, grey of the mogotes limestone rocks. The Valley is an agriculture dreamland for farmers that cultivate plaintains, bananas, tobacco and other crops. It is easy and customary to see farmers breaking the land with oxen and moving around riding horses. The Valley of Viñales was declared a World Heritage site in December of 1999.
